Trabuco Creek, CA
Location
and Overview
Tucked
away in south central Orange County, CA is a perfect gem for fishermen:
Trabuco Creek! Located conveniently close to I-5 and SR 241, Trabuco
Creek sits just east of Rancho Santa Margarita (check out the map),
and it offers some excellent early-season trout fishing. The creek
is small, but Indians in the area actually used to spear 24 to 30-inch
steelhead here during the 1930's! Click here
to read a fascinating interview with one of the Indians who remembers
those days.
To
reach the fishable areas of Trabuco Creek, you'll have to take Trabuco
Creek Road, which is a dirt road that branches off from Trabuco Canyon
Road 0.9 miles west of Plano Trabuco Road. Trabuco Creek Road can
be very rough in places, and is generally not suitable for standard
passenger vehicles. You'll want a high-clearance vehicle at the very
least, and four wheel drive is highly recommended.
Fishin'
Trabuco Creek
The
California Department of Fish and Game stocks trout in Trabuco Creek
from February through the end of May each year; see their website for
the fish
planting schedule. While the fish are not very big, anglers using
light tackle can still have a lot of fun fishing the creek with salmon
eggs or Power Bait.
When
driving out to the creek from Rancho Santa Margarita on Trabuco Creek
Road (see the
map), you'll reach a spot 1.1 miles
from the head of the road where the creek actually crosses the road.
At 2.8 miles you'll reach a second stream crossing, along with a sign
indicating that you're entering a wilderness fee area. Once you pass
this point, park along the side of the road anywhere and start fishin'!
Fish are typically stocked higher upstream, at about the 3.8 mile
mark, where the stream again crosses the road. A series of small dams
starting at the 4.2 mile mark offer create pools which offer excellent
fishing. At 4.7 miles from the paved road the creek crosses the roadway
one last time, and also at this point is a wide area
for parking. This is also a planting point for the Department of Fish
and Game.
A
little farther up the road you'll come to the Holy Jim Volunteer Fire
Department, and a marked trailhead for those who like to hike. Downstream,
Trabuco Creek runs all the way down to San Juan Capistrano, but most
of the lower portion is channelized, and much of it is closed to fishing
- see Licensing and Regulations below.

Southern California weather is typically pleasant, with high temperatures
ranging from the
50's and 60's in winter to the 90's during the summer months. This
area can get fog at times, as well as wind and rain which can make
it downright cold during the winter, but Trabuco Creek has few of
the vagaries of weather that are typically found at higher elevations.
Bear in mind that the fishing season for this area coincides with
the annual early spring rainy season, so make sure you check the weather
forecast before going out and plan accordingly.

Licensing
and Regulations

fishing license above the waist while fishing. There is a five-fish
bag limit on trout. Additionally, the creek is closed to all fishing
from the I-15 bridge downstream to Trabuco Creek's confluence with San
Juan Creek.
Also

of the Cleveland National Forest, all vehicles parking in this area
must display a current Adventure

or from any of numerous vendors throughout southern California. Click
here to find an Adventure Pass vendor in your area.
